Coding, Gaming & Programming for Ages 7-12

July 9, 2018 – July 13, 2018 : 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

What is the most powerful language in the world that most people don’t understand? Answer: the programming code that dictates how computers, mobile phones and, increasingly, even our cars and coffee makers work. This is a class for non-IT based thinkers and users. It takes a conversational, plain-English (not jargon heavy) approach to communicate technical information. Topics include the components of software development: end-user requirements, coding, programming, user interface with graphics and, finally, testing and modifying the application itself. Students progress line by line through fundamental concepts of coding and programming, concluding with a real-world application they can use on their computers, phones or tablets.

About the Instructor:

Ben Pousada is a senior at Marist College where he has a major in Psychology and Early Childhood Special Education. He is currently completing his student teaching in Grade 5 at Poughkeepsie Day School. Ben is a veteran teacher of coding and gaming camps at PDS summer programs and has led these groups for the past three summers. He is very excited to continue teaching this summer. In his free time, Ben enjoys making delicious meals and having compelling conversations with students.

What would a perfect — or just a better — society look like? Over this week, we will create and debate ideas around daily themes (1: Reasoning and persuading; 2: The nature of reality; 3: What and how we know; 4: How we treat other people; 5: Making the world we want to live in) using structured debate, stories the campers read and write, and games like Would You Rather and Prisoner’s Dilemma simulations. The week culminates in the presentation of a class project — our idea for a utopia — to gathered parents and a special guest judge.

Welcome to a week of sorcery, charms, alchemy, and spells! Make a wand to harness your powers. Cook up fun potions, design your own cape, and practice casting spells. Practice quidditch and brush up on your herbology by learning more about plants, flowers, and herbs. We work together to make magic happen. Magical games and a mystical scavenger hunt will round out this week.

Come for one or two weeks!
