The Arts are Alive In Auxiliary Programs at PDS!

After School Enrichment programs and Camp programs at Poughkeepsie Day School offer an abundance of opportunities for students to engage in the visual and performing arts.

New this Enrichment term is Bollywood Dance, led by instructor, Rupa Parikh. Bollywood Dance is truly a joyous celebration of life! These dances are rich with symbolic gestures and movements that trace back to traditional story-telling of Indian Dance, and are set to infectiously funky rhythms.

What It Is Not!
IS a wonderful, whimsical winter enrichment course where lower school students can make creations out of all sorts of found objects. Li Pipman Denaut is the instructor for this up-cycling course, where students explore their creativity in three dimensions.

If you saw the Fall production of
The Wizard of Oz, you’re bound to agree that being part of a musical production is a wonderful way to bring out the unexpected performer in everyone. The community was broadened and strengthened by the participation of all students (both PDS and non PDS students) from Grades 2-8. High school students, parent volunteers, and two very creative costumers all joined the fun and contributed to making the show a big success.

Rehearsals have started for the Spring After School musical production, Alice in Wonderland!

Led by Director Dorothy Luongo and Music Director Todd Hulet, each student will have vocal instruction, dance practice, and learn about performance technique during the process.

It’s an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

March Break Camps

Students may experience the arts in the one week camps offered during the March Break and the Summer.

Younger students love the freedom of crafting interesting objects, painting and sculpting, and spending time outdoors together during our Arts and Crafts Camp (3/16- 3/20). Debby Brooks will be leading this camp for students ages 5-10.

The Wayfinders Experience will be here again, March 16-20 with their unique brand of creative improvising and LARP for students ages 7-14 and up. What is LARP you ask? LARP or Live Action Roleplay is a term that can be applied to a broad spectrum of activities. While there are many types of LARP in the world, Wayfinder’s brand of LARP is contained in something we refer to as “the Adventure Game.” Within the context of an Adventure Game, LARP is an immersive roleplaying experience happening within a world prepared by Wayfinders’ staff for the players. Each player is given the chance to design their own character. Picking the type of character they want to play helps guarantee they have the gameplay experience they want.

PDS Summer Program 2020

PDS Summer Program 2020 is offering a variety of camps devoted to the arts during the months of June and August.

In Nature and Animals in Art, campers can delve into plein air painting, explore different media, and express themselves artistically using Hudson Valley flora and fauna as their prime inspiration (6/22-6/26).

Young Filmmakers and Film Composers camp is back this June, and students have the opportunity to come for one or two weeks. Students immerse themselves into the world of film making and film scoring in a fun-filled, active five day intensive (6/22-6/26 and 6/28-7/3).

Jazz Camp will be back in August for another week of inspirational jazz music. Students work in ensembles, have individual lessons, and learn to improvise.

The week is rounded out by a concert for the community. Students will have a chance to engage in special workshops given by professional guest jazz artists.

An amazing opportunity for all Jazz enthusiasts (8/10-8/14).

James Earl Jones Theater

We’re only half way through this year’s Young Audiences Field Trip Series at the James Earl Jones Theater, and the buzz around each performance has been palpable.

Upcoming shows include:

February 26-27 The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (Grades 2-6 and up)
May 6-7 Jack and Jill’s Ridiculous Spills (Pk-2)

Todd and Gillian are already planning next year’s season of exciting, family-oriented theatrical events! They intend to expand the number of professional shows offered throughout the year for Poughkeepsie Day School and for visiting schools, while maintaining the standards of quality and accessibility. Performances are educational, edifying and, of course, entertaining.
