Egg, caterpillar, milkweed, chrysalis, butterfly, migrate, Mexico….just a few words frequently used by children in the lower school this week. Since the opening of school, children in grades pre-K through two have observed the amazing life cycle of the monarch butterfly. Teachers in each classroom brought in eggs and caterpillars and set the right conditions for the transformation to occur. Daily observations led to the delivery of the big news, “our butterfly hatched!” as a monarch emerged from a chrysalis in each classroom. After a final period of observation, the children released the butterflies so they could begin the journey to a warmer place.
It’s been a lovely shared experience for students and teachers and has deepened our sense of wonder in a very special way.
