By Laura Hicks, high school theater arts
High school drama students are currently in rehearsal for The Green Bird, an adaptation by Hillary DePiano of an Italian Commedia dell’ Arte play originally by Carlo Gozzi. The play is a fairy tale involving mistaken identities, clowns, demons, talking statues, curses, and naturally…a green bird. Students are exploring extreme characterizations, some of whom have been standard stock characters for hundreds of years. The play requires high physical energy and exaggerated movement. We’ve been having a blast figuring out how to bring the various creatures to life on the stage. Four of the students have opted to design sets, costumes and props and run the performances. This is a true ensemble experience for all.
Directed by Laura Hicks and Julie O’Sullivan, we hope that you’ll attend the comedy on Friday, December 9th at 7PM!
