Enrichment Programs for the Winter 2018

Poughkeepsie Day School’s Enrichment Program presents students of all ages with opportunities to learn new skills in a joyful and supportive environment. The program is scheduled parallel to After-School care, so children can join their peers in After for a healthy snack prior to attending class and have the option to re-join them for some downtime when class ends. The fee for After is waived for PDS students on days that they take an enrichment class.

Enrichment Programs are open to the public.

(Mondays) Yoga for Adults

January 8, 2018 – March 12, 2018 : Meets Mondays : 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Take time from your busy day to quiet the mind, connect with your body, engage your focus, and breathe deeply during this yoga series.
During this series, you will recalibrate your body and mind through a guided series of yoga asanas (postures) designed to purify and align the physical body as well as the mind and emotions. Breath awareness and techniques will be a central component of your yoga practice. This yoga practice harnesses the classical teachings of yoga through the application of Hatha Yoga as well as Raja Yoga. Hatha Yoga asanas focus on physical form and breath technique to promote stability, strength, and openings for the body and mind. Raja Yoga maintains a level of mental discipline, integrity, and focus to deeply support the transformative aspects of this practice.
Practicing with breath supports focus as well as properly directs energy during practice, and deepens awareness of body-mind-emotions.
You will receive guidance through a comprehensive series of postures and movements intended to promote health and vitality in a manner which is accessible to all.
Relax at the end of practice during savasana and receive a deep sense of restoration through allowing your energies to rebalance the body and emotions.
All levels of practice are welcome in this class.

January 10, 2018 – March 7, 2018 : Meets Wednesdays : 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Students will be introduced to the varieties of t’ai chi and qigong, including some basic postures and movements, as well as meditation in both sitting and moving forms. This course will also explore the historical roots and philosophical framework of t’ai chi (or taiji), a martial art generally associated with Daoist philosophy and the yin-yang framework, long practiced for its health benefits as well as (or instead of as) a combat art. No prior experience or knowledge is necessary. Just wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing!
