Physical Education Teacher

Poughkeepsie Day School seeks a physical education teacher for students in grades pre-k through 12, beginning on July 1, 2017.

The P.E. teacher will be joining a committed team of educators in a collaborative environment that places a high value on flexible thinking and problem solving.

The position requires a thorough understanding of the essentials of the P.E. curriculum, along with the ability to teach a wide range of ages and to develop a developmentally appropriate curriculum that focuses on group activities and games, as well as individual and lifetime fitness and sports. The PE teacher also teaches health education in the high school.

The position includes coaching.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills and be comfortable using technology.

B.A. required

Admissions Director

The Admissions Director effectively communicates the school’s culture and philosophy  to prospective families and the wider community. The position oversees all aspects of the admissions process, from first inquiry through enrollment. The Admissions Director builds relationships with institutions and groups outside the campus and, as a member of the advancement team, is involved in external marketing, internal communications and events.

This is a 12-month position and reports to the Head of School.

The position requires humor and sincerity, a clear head and a long view, and solid personal and organizational skills. It’s a demanding job, but one that offers great satisfaction!

B.A. required. Master’s preferred. Experience preferred.

Communications Coordinator

This position is an ideal opportunity for an aspiring professional who has some experience in the field, welcomes challenges and understands the need for flexibility and a focused message in communications. It’s not an easy job, but it is never dull!

The successful candidate will develop and implement electronic and print communications, maintain website content and produce public relations messages. As an integral part of the advancement team, the position works closely with fund development, alumni relations and admissions, as well as the head of school, academic administrators and the parents association. Supports are in place for the new employee, but we are looking for someone who wants to take on responsibility and develop ideas. This is a 12-month position and reports to the Director of Fund Development.

Skills:

  • Strong familiarity with social media communications
  • Digital photography and editing skills
  • Basic graphic design skills
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills

B.A. required. Experience preferred.

 

Drama Teacher / Theatrical Technical Director

Poughkeepsie Day School seeks a drama teacher/theatrical technical director. Teaching responsibilities include leading classes in lower school (pre-k through grade 5) and middle school (grades 6 through 8) and directing productions. The theater director is responsible for maintaining a schedule for theater use and managing the technical aspects of events that involve the whole school (pre-k through grade 12). Successful candidates will have experience working with a wide age range, will have excellent organizational skills and the technical expertise needed to support school-wide events.

BA required, MA preferred.

Upper School Spanish Teacher

Poughkeepsie Day School has an opening for a full-time Spanish teacher for middle and high school. We are seeking an experienced educator to teach a progressive, active, student-centered program. Our teachers work collaboratively and design multi-disciplinary experiences for students in all grades, so enthusiasm for engaging in all aspects of the school program is essential. Ability to teach in a second subject area a plus.

B.A. required; M.A. preferred. Experience in independent schools preferred.


Mandarin Teacher / After-school Enrichment Program

Poughkeepsie Day School is seeking a Mandarin Teacher for our after-school enrichment program for grades pre-k through 6. Sessions run once a week, from 3:15 to 5:30pm. Candidates may select the day of their preference:

  • Mondays (from April 4 through May 23)
  • Tuesdays (from April 5 through May 24)
  • Wednesdays (from April 6 through May 25)
  • Thursdays (from April 7 through May 26)
  • Fridays (from April 8 through May 27)

Qualifications include previous teaching experience and a creative approach to language acquisition for young learners.

B.A. required.


After-school Program Assistants

Poughkeepsie day School is seeking several assistants for our after-school program. Hours are from 2:30 to 6:00pm. This is a part-time position, running daily whenever school is open.

Important qualifications, along with a genuine interest and delight in the wellbeing and happiness of children, include the ability to:

  • take responsibility and work as a team
  • recognize how and when to offer support and guidance
  • maintain calm in periods of intense activity
  • interact and communicate well with parents

Personal hobbies and skills are helpful, including: musical ability, theater experience, athletic skills, practice in any of the visual arts and crafts, etc.

Previous experience working with children is essential. The position offers excellent experience for applicants seeking a career in education.


Substitute Teachers

Poughkeepsie Day School is seeking per diem substitute teachers in a variety of subjects for all three academic divisions: lower, middle and high school.

The school day runs from 8:15am to 3:15pm.

B.A. required. New York State certification preferred.
