By Joanna Shaw, kindergarten teacher
Despite the chilly and windy weather, the kindergartner’s studies have leapt into spring. Inspired by And then it’s Spring, by Julie Fogliano, the children collaborated on a sensory poem. They used their five senses and their imaginations to write vivid descriptions of the newly emerging season.
In addition, we reviewed what happens to seeds in springtime, and used our bodies to act out germination. We read the silly story, Grow Flower Grow by Lisa Bruce. In it a young girl offers her sprouting flowers a variety of human food with the hopes of helping it grow. We reenacted the scenes and practiced growing when water, sunlight and air were present. Each kindergartner became a strong and healthy plant!
And then it’s Spring
By Kindergarten Class
First you see….
A little green coming up from the ground
or
A little bit of fluffy snow melting
Then you hear…
A tweeting sound coming from the forest
or
A butterfly’s wings flapping on a flower
Sometimes you smell…
Perfect vanilla plants in the garden
or
Dandelion seeds lying in the grass
You can even taste…
A piece of the sun and it tastes like watermelon
or
The warm breezes of spring
Maybe you feel…
A little drop of rain from the morning sun
or
A soft petal from a flower and it feels like spring
And then it’s spring
