There is a long tradition of “community singing” at PDS. For years, classes in the lower elementary grades have gotten together to sing. This year the two second grade classes meet once every 8 days with music teacher Bill Fiore. The students sing songs about the Hudson River, along with classic folk songs. Bill is a wonderful song writer as well, and they learn curriculum oriented original songs Bill has written.
With the opening of the new assisted-living senior community (“The Landing at Poughkeepsie”) across the street, it was natural that we find a way to bring songs across the street to brighten the day of our neighbors.
With the initiative of second grade teachers Lynn Fordin & Bill, a date was set to sing for the residents. On Friday, the two classes walked across Boardman Road over to the brand new “Landing at Poughkeepsie”. It was an incredibly wonderful moment and the kids enjoyed the opportunity to sing. From the looks on the faces of the residents that gathered around comfortable chairs in the lobby of the facility, it was a great success. The children sang familiar folk songs – Puff the Magic Dragon, You are My Sunshine, and This Little Light of Mine. Many of the residents joined in to sing along with these old favorites. They asked for more and the kids obliged with several other songs. It was a very rewarding journey and community service at its best. We’ll be back!
