Head of Middle School

Poughkeepsie Day School  seeks a collaborative, thoughtful leader for our middle school, starting July 1, 2017. The middle school head reports to the head of school and serves as part of the senior administrative team.

The middle school has approximately 60 students in grades 6-8, working in the context of an innovative schedule and based in an adaptable light-filled learning space. The successful candidate must be a flexible and experienced teacher and leader, familiar with middle schoolers and progressive, child-centered education, ready to lead and support a successful middle school team of teachers and eager to help them continue to develop their craft and the curriculum. The candidate will be comfortable and thoughtful working with our 1:1 laptop program and continue to cultivate a strong digital citizenship curriculum.

The ability to remain organized while leading in a collaborative environment is important, especially as our faculty and students work across conventional subject boundaries. Ease with parent communication is a must, as is experience in balancing a planned curriculum and emergent learning opportunities.

BA required; MA preferred. Minimum of six years’ teaching experience and some experience supervising and leading teachers required.

Mandarin Teacher / After-school Enrichment Program

Poughkeepsie Day School is seeking a Mandarin Teacher for our after-school enrichment program for grades pre-k through 6. Sessions run once a week, from 3:15 to 5:30pm. Candidates may select the day of their preference:

  • Mondays (from April 4 through May 23)
  • Tuesdays (from April 5 through May 24)
  • Wednesdays (from April 6 through May 25)
  • Thursdays (from April 7 through May 26)
  • Fridays (from April 8 through May 27)

Qualifications include previous teaching experience and a creative approach to language acquisition for young learners.

B.A. required.

After-school Program Assistants

Poughkeepsie day School is seeking several assistants for our after-school program. Hours are from 2:30 to 6:00pm. This is a part-time position, running daily whenever school is open.

Important qualifications, along with a genuine interest and delight in the wellbeing and happiness of children, include the ability to:

  • take responsibility and work as a team
  • recognize how and when to offer support and guidance
  • maintain calm in periods of intense activity
  • interact and communicate well with parents

Personal hobbies and skills are helpful, including: musical ability, theater experience, athletic skills, practice in any of the visual arts and crafts, etc.

Previous experience working with children is essential. The position offers excellent experience for applicants seeking a career in education.

Substitute Teachers

Poughkeepsie Day School is seeking per diem substitute teachers in a variety of subjects for all three academic divisions: lower, middle and high school.

The school day runs from 8:15am to 3:15pm.

B.A. required. New York State certification preferred.
